In July 2024, a new borehole was drilled in Chera to provide clean and reliable water for the sheabutter factory and the surrounding community. A water stand equipped with a polytank was installed to store and distribute the water, ensuring a consistent supply for the production of shea butter.
Currently, the Chera community relies on a deep water well, using plastic containers to draw water — a process that is time-consuming and labor-intensive. Plans are underway to ease this burden significantly, serving around 100 households with safe, potable water.
The community willl gain access to the surplus water pumped from the borehole. To ensure fair distribution, plans are underway to implement a token tap system, where residents can use coins or tokens to access a regulated amount of water. This system will allow the community to benefit fully from the new infrastructure.

The borehole is not just a step forward for the factory but also a critical development for Chera and potentially nearby communities. By reducing the workload on women and improving access to clean water, this initiative is fostering better health, economic opportunities, and overall well-being for the people of Chera. 💧
